Ok, this isn’t a hiking post, but it is definitely a fun adventure! Matapeake is across the Bay Bridge on Kent Island off Romancoke Road. It has been our go to beach for several years now because it is cleaner and less busy than Sandy Point. A few weeks ago, on a beautiful Saturday morning, we pulled into the parking lot to discover word was out about this beach! Normally, there would be oodles of spots, but today we were lucky to get one! FYI, there is a porta potty in the lot. Pre-covid, the place had a bathroom in a trailer, and it was a decent bathroom with running water, but that is padlocked closed right now.

In order to reach the beach you have two options. The main option is to pass through the gates, walk past the clubhouse and take the path downhill to the beach. If you are bringing a furry friend, you take option two. Make a right before the gate and follow a wooded pathway down to the dog beach.

Once we arrived on the beach, we headed to the left and snagged a spot in the shade near a picnic bench. We preferred to stay toward the back of the beach due to the shade there and it was easier to keep a 6 foot perimeter.

Once we set up camp and slathered the kiddos in sunscreen, we turned them loose. Stormy made a beeline for the water with Rainbow right behind her! Pebble was the most cautious of the three. The kids had a blast swimming and building sandcastles. We headed home after lunch when the number of people arriving were too many for social distancing. If you go, go early! Happy trails!
