Hi everyone! Sorry I haven’t posted in a while! We have been on a few adventures, but I got caught up in the whirl of prepping for virtual learning / school starting / new job duties / one last vacation, etc.!! Now I get to make up for lost time!
On Sunday, we stepped out of said whirl and went to one of our favorite happy places…the beach! We haven’t been to Matapeake since the beginning of the summer, and the girls were beyond excited! Stormy and Pebble wanted to swim and Rainbow wanted to play in the sand.
When we arrived, the parking lot had a lot of cars, but there was still plenty of space. Unlike last time, there was a county employee present counting visitors. Hubby asked him how many people were allowed on the beach and he said 200! Fortunately, there weren’t this many people today. There are porta-potties in the parking lot and it looked like the restrooms were unlocked and useable, too.
There were a fair amount of people on the beach, especially on the dog beach, but still plenty of room to social distance. We noticed there weren’t many people in the water, and I assumed it was due to the cooler temperatures. We soon discovered that the jellyfish which invade the Bay in the summer were still hanging out! Definitely not a swimming day, but we still had a great time!
I tried my hand at making different styles of sand castles to Pebble’s delight. She channeled her inner Godzilla and happily trampled each one!
Keeping a wary eye out for jellyfish, the girls darted in and out of the water, not going further than ankle deep.
Weirdly, I spotted something bobbing in the waves that didn’t seem to be something normally found in the Bay. As the current pulled it closer to shore, I discovered that some of the objects were roses and the other floaters were cucumbers! Stormy and Rainbow were thrilled with these finds, and wanted to eat the cucumbers. I said no to eating, but we did bring them home to cut open. We wanted to see if pickling in the Bay had changed them in any way, but it didn’t seem too…
All in all, it was a fun and relaxing few hours at the beach, just what we all needed! I love visiting this beach, and highly recommend it. You just may want to wait till the jellies are gone to venture into the water. Happy trails!
