Since quarantine has started, we have been here twice! Like Terrapin Nature Park, Ferry Point is on Kent Island and it is also free. In order to access the park, you park in a lot at the Chesapeake Heritage and Visitor Center. Be forewarned, this lot is busy! Earlier is better! The Center is closed so your only option is the porta-potty in the lot or a portable toilet. You know what I think of porta-potties!

This Park has only one trail. That trail leads from the side of the Center down a narrow boardwalk, and then down a black topped road to the beach. The views from the boardwalk are beautiful, but the width of it does make social distancing a challenge, especially when people are on bikes.

Once you reach the beach, you see a long, beautiful crescent shaped beach with a jetty on the far side. If you turn right and walk down the path toward the jetty there are numerous little tracts that lead through the dune grass to the sand. The further you go, the fewer people.

We set up camp on the sand and let the littles go nuts. Our first time here, it was cool and in the 50’s. We told the girls no wading past their ankles. Well that decision went the way of the dodos, and before we knew it, we had 3 soaked, blue-lipped shivering kids. Fortunately, we’d brought towels, baby powder and extra clothes! The second time we visited Ferry Point, it was much warmer and the kids were able to wear suits. Of course, there were a lot more people there then, too!

Ferry Point Park is surrounded on three sides by water, Kent Narrows, Chester River, and Piney Creek. The beach is calm with almost no waves, which Pebble loved as waves scare her. The water is shallow a long way out. It can be clear as a bell, which makes it easy to spot the large oyster shells waiting underwater for little hands to find them. Clear water also helped Stormy spy a surprise in the water we didn’t expect… Jellyfish! We were surprised to see them so early in the year, so please keep an eye out for them if you go!

While at Ferry Point, you will see an abundance of wildlife! Our first time there we saw an eagle soaring over the marshes! There were several osprey flying over the bay and even an osprey sitting on her nest voicing her discontent anytime anyone wandered too close! Rainbow and I also saw several schools of minnows. As a place to hike, Ferry Point is not it! It is a peaceful spot to soak up the sun, enjoy a picnic, and let the littles enjoy the water and the sand. Happy trails!
